Hossein Abbasnezhad, the head of Maritime Affairs at the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization, told IRNA that all Iranian-flagged, as well as foreign ships entering the country’s waters, are subject to technical, safety, and environmental inspections.
He said that Iran is a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and has signed more than 30 international conventions and protocols on maritime safety and environment.
“Iran observes all requirements, and despite cruel sanctions and the existing economic pressure, the Iranian-flagged fleet is navigating without any technical problems. There have been no reports of environmental contamination by the Iranian fleet.”
Abbasnezhad also said that the Iranian naval fleet ranks among the top 20 in the world and is working hard to create the best conditions in the sea, given the fact that more than 90% of Iran’s trade is conducted through the sea.
